PCMD’s student wins 3rd prize among 200 teams from all over Pakistan

An M.Phil. student of the Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD), University of Karachi has participated in the data science competition in Pakistan, and secured 3rd Prize Datathon Champion award with a cash prize of Rs.200,000 recently.



The Spokesman of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) – University of Karachi on Tuesday said Muhammad Awais was pursuing his M.Phil. under the supervision of Dr. Humaira Zafar and co-supervision of Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary.

According to the spokesman, Muhammad Awais along with two other students, namely Zain Shahid from NED University and Muhammad Umair Ali from Virtual University got his team registered in the Datathon, the first of its kind Data science competition in Pakistan, organized by UBL Pakistan. Muhammad Awais was the leader of his team, named ‘Codanians’.


Around 200 teams from all over Pakistan Participated in the Datathon, the official said, adding that the shortlisted teams were asked to develop their ideas and present a working solution to the problem of the industries.


Codanians, under the leadership of Muhammad Awais, presented a “Customer Sentiment Analysis” model via Voice analytics in real-time using Artificial Intelligence. The team has secured the 3rd Prize Datathon Champion award with a cash prize of RS.200,000.

The prize awarding ceremony was held at Habib University in the first week of June. UBL President & CEO Shazad G. Dada presented the award to the winners.


Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, and COMSTECH Coordinator General, congratulated the student, and said that the ICCBS was proud to have a pool of such talented young scholars.


Vice Chancellor University of Karachi Prof. Dr. Nasira Khatoon and Prof. Atta-ur Rahman, ICCBS Patron-in-chief and former Federal Minister for Science and Technology, also congratulated the student for his achievement.
